In a bold move set to reshape the global water economy, DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) has partnered with AQUA-INDEX, a pioneer in water commodities trading, to launch the world’s first digital token backed by freshwater reserves.
This landmark agreement supports a transformative vision: using blockchain to tokenize water — a precious, yet often undervalued resource. Backed by verified, drinkable water stored in global reservoirs, the token will allow investors, traders, and even everyday individuals to trade, hold, or take delivery of water like any other commodity.
Why This Partnership Matters
This collaboration goes far beyond digital innovation — it’s about creating a transparent, structured, and secure marketplace for one of Earth’s most critical resources.
DMCC and AQUA-INDEX’s partnership is already accelerating the development of the DMCC Water Centre — an ambitious ecosystem that will position Dubai as a central, neutral hub for global water trading, research, and sustainable best practices.
A New Era for Water as a Commodity
For the first time, water is being treated not just as a vital resource, but as a regulated financial asset. The token introduces new levels of:
- Liquidity and transparency in global water supply chains
- Access to hedging tools and investment opportunities
- WaterTech innovation and infrastructure development, particularly in water-stressed regions
DMCC will provide the infrastructure and global network needed to support this initiative, while AQUA-INDEX brings its patented expertise in pricing, quality standardization, and water-backed assets.
Voices Behind the Innovation
“Water remains the only vital resource without a regulated global market. With AQUA-INDEX, we’re building the structure needed to change that,” said Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC.
“This is about future-proofing the world’s most transported commodity and building a marketplace that prioritizes transparency, neutrality, and sustainability.”
Yaacov Shirazi, Chairman and Founder of AQUA-INDEX, added,
“This is a gamechanger. By valuing water based on its usage and turning it into a new asset class, we are addressing scarcity, access, and contamination at a global level.”
Looking Ahead
While the token is not directly owned or managed by DMCC, it forms a core pillar of the DMCC Water Centre’s strategy — helping to reshape how the world trades and manages water in the era of climate change and rising demand.
Details on how the token will be traded, delivered, and regulated will be revealed soon.
Stay tuned as Dubai steps into its new role — not just as a city of innovation, but as a global leader in sustainable water trading and digital transformation.
