MDP Becomes Egypt’s First Payment Processor to Enable Tokenized Transactions with Meeza and Apple Pay
Cairo, Egypt – In a major leap forward for the Egyptian digital payments landscape, MDP, Africa’s leading digital payments enabler, has become the first payment processor in Egypt to enable tokenization for electronic transactions. This milestone was achieved through a strategic collaboration with the country’s national payment network Meeza, in integration with Apple Wallet.
The breakthrough marks the successful completion of the token provisioning phase, allowing all banks and fintech institutions in Egypt to digitally provision physical cards onto Apple Wallet. With this advancement, any compatible iPhone or Apple device can now function as a secure, contactless payment tool—ushering in a new era of fast, safe, and seamless payments.
Tokenization: Redefining Payment Security
Tokenization works by replacing a user’s sensitive card information with a unique, encrypted digital token. This ensures that the actual card details are never stored on the device or shared during transactions, drastically reducing the risk of fraud. Consumers can now make payments with their smartphones or smartwatches, authenticated through Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode—with each transaction authorized by a one-time, dynamic security code.
The result is a highly secure and frictionless experience for both point-of-sale (POS) and e-commerce transactions—something increasingly demanded in today’s digital-first world.
Driving Egypt’s Digital Transformation
This move directly supports the Central Bank of Egypt’s vision for nationwide digital adoption and payment security. The impact is already visible:
- POS transaction volume surged to EGP 640 billion by the end of 2024, a 280% increase from 2021
- E-commerce transactions crossed EGP 180 billion, a 500% rise over the same period
These numbers reflect Egypt’s accelerating digital momentum—and tokenization will be key to sustaining this growth, offering a safer and more scalable foundation for digital finance.
